Schedule in a nutshell

The 2018 Summer Institute will begin on the afternoon of Sunday 3 June 2018 with scholars’ workshops, a session on mentorship, and other activities. On Sunday evening, the community will formally welcome the 2018 scholars, fellows, and mentors. On Monday, we will learn about each other’s work and get current on Foundation affairs. Tuesday and Wednesday will be devoted to learning about Newfoundland-and-Labrador affairs through field trips and meetings. The Summer Institute will conclude with a gala dinner on Wednesday 6 June.

Kindly note that this year’s Summer Institute is one day shorter than last year, in order to accommodate an optional add-on visit to Labrador from 7 to 11 June 2018. For more information about the visit to Labrador, please click here.

What are my transportation options for getting to and from the event?

All scholars, fellows, and mentors are responsible for booking their own flights to and from St. John’s, Newfoundland-and-Labrador (YYT). When booking your flight, please do not confuse St. John’s, Newfoundland-and-Labrador, with Saint John, New Brunswick. Kindly arrive no later than 2 pm on Sunday 3 June and leave no earlier than Thursday 7 June.

The Foundation’s Travel Policy engages community members to make prudent use of the Foundation’s resources. For that reason, we encourage Foundation-supported travellers to book as quickly as possible in order to secure less expensive seats. The Foundation will not reimburse costs associated with late flight reservations.

Where are we staying? How long do I have to reserve?

The Foundation has reserved a block of rooms at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland at a rate of $219 per night (no extra costs for double occupancy). All scholars, fellows, and mentors are responsible for booking their own room. The Foundation’s room block is good until 2 May 2018. After 2 May, we cannot guarantee that the hotel will have a room for you. You may book your room here.

What’s the dress code for the Summer Institute?

The weather in St. John’s in June can be changeable and you should be prepared for rain. For inside sessions, please feel free to wear the equivalent of “casual office Fridays” during the day and nicer clothes for evenings. Wednesday night is our gala evening (jacket and tie). 

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

No, your registration is not transferrable. Please note that this event in strictly open to the Foundation's community members. To find out about bringing family members, please see the next FAQ.

What do I need to know about bringing my family?

The Foundation's Summer Institute is open to the family members of Foundation scholars, fellows, and mentors with young families or with family members who have expertise in the subjects explored at the Institute. Scholars, fellows, and mentors must register family members using this family registration form, and are responsible for paying for the family’s costs of participating in the Institute. Please note that capacity restrictions are such that not all Summer Institute activities are open to family members. Whether or not a scholar, fellow, or mentor is accompanied by his or her family at the Institute, the Foundation expects scholars, fellows, and mentors to attend all Summer Institute activities, including meals. 

What about young children?

The Foundation does not charge for the meal costs of children under the age of 12. If you wish to register your child for a field trip, please contact Catalina Chew at cpchew@trudeaufoundation.ca.
