2015 Trudeau scholar Erin Aylward, a doctoral student in political science and women and gender studies at the University of Toronto, was one of a team that organized a workshop on Canada’s role in promoting international lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) rights at the International Development Research Center, Ottawa, on 1-2 June 2016.

Under the leadership of the Dignity Initiative, a recently formed national LGBTI working group, this roundtable convened actors working to improve LGBTI global rights and develop common strategies for the future of advocacy, public engagement, and research on this topic. Together, academics, NGO representatives, and federal public servants identified priorities, strategies for working with international organizations, and ways to better share initiatives and methods.

The Dignity Initiative also launched two reports on best practices for advancing the human rights of LGBTI people.
